(Toronto, ON, November 23, 2010) Today, the province of Ontario, through the Minister of Energy Brad Duguid, tabled the Long–Term Energy Plan (LTEP).
“The LTEP is an important step in advancing renewable energy, encouraging energy conservation, creating and supporting green jobs and Ontario’s growing green economy. Industry looks to government for long term plans so they can make commitments to jobs and investments,” stated Stephen Koch, Executive Director of NAIMA Canada after reviewing the announcement at Queen’s Park. “The LTEP will keep Ontario on the high-road set out by the Green Energy and Economy Act (GEEA) of being a global leader in the field of energy-related sustainability.”
"NAIMA is pleased with the overall direction of the plan, especially the reinforcement that the Building Code will include energy efficient measures,” observed Koch, who went on to say, “The intent of the plan will benefit consumers and businesses in Ontario over the long-term. However, in the short-term we are concerned about no action in enacting the mandatory audits on resale homes outlined in the GEEA (passed in spring 2009) and are concerned about the weak language when referring to the Home Energy Savings Plan program.”
Koch concluded, "Despite real concern about the commitment to energy audits, it's increasingly clear that Minister Duguid realizes that the buildings we live and work in can have enormous carbon footprints. He demonstrated leadership by using the GEEA to ensure a review of energy efficiency in the Code on a continuous five year cycle. This is an important and remarkably effective way of combating climate change, saving money and creating jobs.”
